Per molti di noi l’anno si divide in una serie di traguardi stagionali che cerchiamo di raggiungere cercando di evitare di farci troppo male nel tragitto. Finite le ferie natalizie guardiamo alla Pasqua. Dopodiché ci concentriamo sui ponti del 25 Aprile, 1 Maggio e 2 Giugno. Di seguito ci sono le eventuali vacanze estive e il cerchio si chiude col ritorno al Natale.
Ma se in molte parti del mondo si inizia a fare il conto alla rovescia al 25 Dicembre già dal 15 Agosto, nei paesi anglofoni (e sempre più anche in Italia) l’arrivo di Ottobre significa una sola cosa: preparare dolci, zucche e maschere spaventose per la notte del 31 Ottobre!!
Halloween is definitely an ancient holiday, although it hasn’t always been all about sweets, sexy vampire costumes and the very American “Trick or Treat?”. It all began as a Celtic festival, the “Samhain”, celebrated on the last day of the year (back then the year began on the 1st of November) when the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead was very thin and ghosts could trespass to wreak havoc. To banish these spirits, the Celts used to gather around bonfires, while offering sacrifices to the Celtic deities and making predictions about the future. All this, while wearing animal heads and skins.
Con l’arrivo dei Romani e, successivamente, con la cristianizzazione dell’odierno Regno Unito, le antiche festività pagane vennero integrate con -e spesso rimpiazzate da- nuove festività Cristiane. Ecco quindi che il primo giorno di Novembre divenne “Tutti i santi”. Ma si sa: è sempre difficile cancellare le tradizioni del popolo. Così, il giorno prima di “All-Hallows” (l’antico nome inglese di “Tutti i Santi”) divenne “All-Hallows Eve”, in seguito abbreviato in Halloween.
The holiday evolved over time into what we know (and many of us love) today, with horrific costumes replacing animal skins and lively parties replacing the bonfire gatherings.
Good News, then. This year Halloween is a Saturday! Bad News: we may still have to avoid meetings with a lot of people due to Coronavirus. Hopefully, the skeleton costumes will scare the virus away!
